On May 16, 2023, during the 10th Meeting of the Singapore-Nanjing Key Projects Cooperation Committee, Dr. Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment and concurrently for the Ministry of Manpower as well as the Singapore-side Co-chair of the Singapore-Nanjing Key Projects Cooperation Committee, Mr. Chua Teng Hoe, Consul-General of Singapore in Shanghai, Mr. Lee Ek Chian, Chairman of Business China, and a delegation from Enterprise Singapore paid a visit to Keppel's first high-quality enabling senior care facility in China, which is located in Qixia District of Nanjing City, to tour this senior care project soon to be completed and opened.

Dr. Koh Poh Koon and his delegation paid a visit to Keppel's first enabling senior care project in China.
At the end of 2022, Keppel launched its first enabling senior care facility in Nanjing, marking its foray into China's senior care market. With a total gross floor area of 19,846 square meters and approximately 400 beds, the project is to be renovated and operated by Keppel. Located in Yanziji New Town, Qixia District of Nanjing, the project boasts beautiful scenery and a profound cultural heritage. It is surrounded by Grade A tertiary hospitals, parks, schools as well as commercial and entertainment facilities, and is scheduled to officially open in the second half of 2023. This senior care facility, featuring low-carbon, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly attributes, not only empowers seniors' later life with a lifestyle that transcends traditional models, but also provides day care and home care services for residents of the surrounding communities, thus bringing benefits to them.
Dr. Koh Poh Koon stated: "Population aging is a challenge faced by many societies including Singapore and China. As a Singaporean multinational enterprise that has deep roots in the Chinese market for more than 30 years, Keppel’s first senior care project in China exemplifies the broad cooperation opportunities between Singapore and China, as well as between Singapore and Nanjing. Singapore attaches great importance to the development of low-carbon energy efficiency and green technology, and has accumulated certain experience in these fields. I am delighted to see that Keppel has integrated innovative concepts covering low-carbon, energy efficiency and environmental protection into this project, thereby enhancing the living experience of the elderly. I hope that enterprises from Singapore and Nanjing will continue to pool their strengths, work hand in hand, and fully leverage technological and innovative solutions to maximize social benefits."
Mr. Lim Joo Yi, President of Keppel's Real Estate Business, stated: "Over the more than 30 years of our development in China, we have witnessed the rapid urbanization of the country, and have proactively transformed our business to focus on areas such as sustainable urban renewal, senior care, urban living, retail, and large-scale integrated development. Keppel's real estate business aims to be a provider of innovative and sustainable urban space solutions, and senior care services are one of the key growth engines in our strategy. We are delighted to launch our first senior care project in China in Nanjing, to support the growing demand for high-quality care services and senior care facilities amid China's aging process."
Global Leading Team | Driving Industry-wide Innovation Through Sustainable Operations
Although it is Keppel's first foray into China's senior care market, the company boasts outstanding operational capabilities and rich experience in the senior care sector. Keppel holds a 50% stake in Watermark Retirement Communities, one of the largest senior care operators in the United States. This company manages more than 70 senior care communities across the US and provides a diverse range of services including active aging care, general care and memory care.
Furthermore, Keppel has built a professional and highly experienced management team for its senior care business, whose members have previously worked at leading senior care institutions in China, Singapore, Europe and the United States, boasting years of successful operational and management experience. Under the guidance of this team, a full range of internationally leading theoretical and practical training programs will be fully rolled out among the frontline operational service teams, ensuring that all staff can deliver high-quality services to seniors.
Centered on Keppel’s core strategy of sustainable development, its first enabling senior care project is also underpinned by the concept of sustainability. In this regard, its mechanical and electrical design adheres to the principles of green energy conservation, with eco-friendly and stably operating main equipment and systems all selected to create a green building and comfortable environment where people can "breathe easy". Boosting high-quality development through green design and building materials, the project is a senior care facility that has obtained the LEED Gold Pre-certification for green buildings. Meanwhile, Keppel will also give full play to the role of smart technology, develop a smart operation and care system, and by virtue of advanced smart health assistive devices, implement refined health assessment, monitoring and risk prevention, as well as build an online-offline integrated family connection platform. Backed by technology, it will drive industry innovation, enhance seniors’ health and strengthen the emotional bonds between seniors and their families.
As the flagship project of Keppel's senior care business, the upcoming completion of this enabling senior care facility in Nanjing also marks Keppel's official introduction of its successful experience in Singapore's international quality control system, green building, smart operations and other key areas into the Chinese market. It empowers seniors in multiple dimensions including physical and mental well-being, creates an immersive life paradise, and enables them to live a fulfilling and wonderful later life. It also further contributes to deepening the friendly cooperative relations between the governments of Singapore and China.
